Veterans Assistance Commission of Winnebago County Invites Public to Attend Budget Meetings

Rockford, IL — The Veterans Assistance Commission of Winnebago County (VACWC) invites the public to attend two upcoming meetings to observe and engage in the Commission’s fiscal planning process for the 2026 budget year.

The VACWC Finance Committee will meet on Thursday, June 5th at 2:00 PM at Veterans Memorial Hall, 211 N Main St, Rockford, Illinois. The purpose of this meeting is to review and discuss the proposed Fiscal Year 2026 budget.

In addition, the full body of the VACWC will convene on Wednesday, June 11th at 5:30 PM at the same location to formally vote on the adoption of the budget.

Superintendent Jesus Pereira encourages residents to attend and learn about how the VACWC serves the veterans of Winnebago County. He also clarifies that as a unit of local government, the VACWC is responsible for setting its own budget, while it is the county’s responsibility to determine the appropriate funding mechanism.

“Historically, the County has used a modest tax levy to support our work typically amounting to $20 to $30 per year for every $100,000 of a home’s taxable value,” Pereira said. “However, as a mandated funding entity under Illinois law, we are asking for your support in urging the County to fund the VACWC entirely through the general fund, or through a hybrid approach using both general fund dollars and a reduced tax levy. This would help relieve the tax burden on homeowners while ensuring our veterans continue to receive the services they’ve earned.”

All community members, veterans, and supporters are encouraged to attend and show their support for those who have served our nation.
